Avian Influenza

Avian influenza is an infection caused by influeza virus A. These virus occur naturally among birds. It is highly contagious. The virus is transmitted to humans from bird droppings(feces) as well as secretions from the infected birds discharge from eyes, nose or beak,eggs or semen).
Signs and symptoms includes fever, Sore throat, muscle aches, eye infections.The highly pathogenic forms spread through flocks of poultry. The first individuals who chan have the infections are those working in the poultry farms.
Here are some means to inactivate the virus 1.temperature at 56 degrees celcius for 3 hours or 60 degrees for 30 minutes 2. chemicals with ph less than 5 (acidic) or greater than 8 (basic) 3. chemicals like lipid solvents eg ether or sodium dodecyl sulphate.
Drugs given to treat this infection is Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) or Zanamivir (Relensa).
To control the infection in the poultry farms,the following must be done 1. slaughtering of all infected birds 2. disposal of animal products 3. cleaning and disinfection 4. Allow 21 days before restocking. For individuals in contact with the infected birds or products,the following must be advised 1. handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling raw poultry and eggs.2. Clean cutting boards and other utensils with soap and hot water to keep raw poultry from contaminating other foods. 3.cook eggs until whites and yolks are firm. 4. Use a food thermometer to makle sure you cook poultry to a temperature of at least 165 degrees fahrenheit.
